Know Everything About Maldaru Lake Trek
The Maldaru Lake Trek is one of the hidden gems of Uttarakhand, tucked away in the scenic Govind Pashu Vihar National Park near Sankri. At an altitude of around 14,338 ft, the pristine Maldaru Lake is revered by locals as sacred and offers a breathtaking view of surrounding Himalayan peaks like Swargarohini, Black Peak (Kalanag), Bandarpoonch, and Har Ki Dun Valley.
Starting from Sankri village, the trail passes through dense pine, oak, and rhododendron forests, charming villages, and expansive alpine meadows dotted with colorful wildflowers. The trek is also a delight for birdwatchers and wildlife lovers, with chances to spot Himalayan monals, bharals, and other high-altitude fauna. The highlight, of course, is reaching the shimmering Maldaru Lake, set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and believed to be the abode of local deities.
The trek is graded as moderate to difficult, covering a duration of 7–8 days and a total distance of around 45–50 km. It demands good physical fitness due to steep ascents, rocky trails, and high-altitude camping. Best seasons to attempt the Maldaru Lake Trek are May–June (when meadows bloom with flowers) and September–October (for crystal-clear mountain views).
For trekkers seeking solitude, untouched beauty, and a blend of adventure with cultural richness, the Maldaru Lake Trek offers an unforgettable Himalayan experience that goes beyond the usual trails.
Maldaru Lake Trek itinerary
Day 1. Dehradun To Sankri
Distance: ~200 km
Time: 8–9 hours drive
Altitude: 2,150 ft (Dehradun) → 6,400 ft (Sankri)
Route: Dehradun → Mussoorie → Kempty Falls → Purola → Mori → Netwar → Sankri
Your journey to the Maldaru Lake Trek begins with a scenic drive from Dehradun to Sankri, the picturesque base village for several famous treks in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park. Starting early in the morning, the route winds through Mussoorie hills, offering breathtaking views of the Doon valley and the Shivalik ranges. A quick halt at Kempty Falls is a popular option for trekkers before continuing the mountain drive.
As the journey progresses, you pass through charming towns like Purola, Mori, and Netwar, each giving a glimpse of Garhwali culture and Himalayan village life. The road runs parallel to the Tons River, with dense pine, deodar, and oak forests making the drive even more scenic. Keep your eyes open for stunning vistas of snow-capped peaks peeking through the valleys.
By evening, you arrive at Sankri (6,400 ft), a quaint mountain village surrounded by towering peaks. Sankri is not only the starting point for the Maldaru Lake Trek but also for other popular treks like Har Ki Dun, Kedarkantha, and Phulara Ridge. Accommodation is usually arranged in guesthouses or homestays, where trekkers can enjoy warm local hospitality and a hearty meal.
Overnight stay at Sankri prepares you for the trekking adventure ahead. It’s recommended to use this time for acclimatization, briefing with trek leaders, checking your gear, and soaking in the mountain atmosphere before the trek officially begins on the next day.
Day 2. Sankri To Batgoera
Distance: 20 km drive + 6 km trek
Time: 1 hour drive + 4–5 hours trek
Altitude: Sankri (1,950 m) → Dharkot (2,200 m) → Batgoera (2,750 m)
Route: Sankri – Dharkot – Batgoera
After an early morning breakfast at Sankri, you will start with a short but scenic drive to Dharkot village (2,200 m), a charming hamlet surrounded by apple orchards and traditional wooden houses. Dharkot is also known for its panoramic views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak (Kalanag), which gives trekkers the first real glimpse of the mighty peaks they will be walking under for the next few days.
From Dharkot, the actual trek begins towards Batgoera campsite. The initial stretch takes you through thick oak, pine, and rhododendron forests that keep the trail shaded and cool. During spring, these forests burst with red and pink rhododendron blooms, while in autumn, golden leaves line the path. The trail is alive with the sounds of Himalayan birds like woodpeckers, barbets, and magpies, and if lucky, you might even spot a barking deer or a Himalayan langur.
As you move higher, the dense forest slowly opens up into rolling bugyals (meadows) with lush grass and scattered wildflowers. The trek offers plenty of natural water sources, including clear mountain streams, where you can refill your bottles. Short breaks at these spots make the journey refreshing.
By afternoon, you will reach the Batgoera campsite (2,750 m), a breathtaking open meadow surrounded by towering pine and deodar trees. Batgoera is known for its peaceful setting and wide valley views, making it one of the most beautiful camping grounds of the Maldaru Trek. In the evening, enjoy hot tea with snacks while watching the golden hues of sunset paint the Himalayan ranges. After dinner, spend your first night under the starry skies, getting the true feeling of being in the high Himalayas.
Day 3. Batgoera To Rashi
Distance: 7–8 km trek
Time: 5–6 hours
Altitude: Batgoera (2,750 m) → Rashi (3,300 m)
Route: Batgoera – Forest Trails – Rashi Campsite
Wake up to the refreshing mountain air at Batgoera campsite and enjoy a hot breakfast before starting today’s trek. The trail from Batgoera to Rashi is moderately challenging, with gradual ascents through dense forests and open clearings. The path winds through a mix of oak, pine, and birch trees, providing natural shade and a cool trekking atmosphere.
As you climb higher, the vegetation slowly thins, giving way to alpine meadows and clear ridges that open up stunning views of Himalayan peaks such as Swargarohini, Black Peak (Kalanag), and Bandarpoonch. Along the way, you will encounter bubbling streams and natural water points, perfect for short breaks. The trail is also dotted with colorful wildflowers in summer, making it a photographer’s delight.
By afternoon, you will reach the Rashi campsite (3,300 m), located on an expansive meadow that overlooks panoramic valleys on one side and snow-capped peaks on the other. Rashi is one of the most scenic halts of the trek, offering wide-open spaces for camping and a peaceful environment away from human habitation. In the evening, relax with tea and snacks, soak in the golden sunset, and prepare for a cozy night under the stars.
Day 4. Rashi To Maldaru Lake
Distance: 7–8 km trek
Time: 5–6 hours
Altitude: Rashi (3,300 m) → Maldaru Lake (4,500 m)
Route: Rashi – High-Altitude Meadows – Maldaru Lake
Today is one of the most exciting and rewarding days of the trek as you make your way to the sacred Maldaru Lake. After an early breakfast at Rashi, you begin a steady ascent that gradually takes you above the treeline. The trail passes through lush alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and high-altitude pastures with spellbinding views all around.
As you gain altitude, the Himalayan panorama widens, with snow-clad peaks like Swargarohini, Black Peak (Kalanag), Bandarpoonch, and Yamunotri ranges rising dramatically in the distance. The air becomes crisper, and the landscape turns more rugged, with patches of wildflowers and glacial streams adding charm to the journey.
By afternoon, you will reach the holy Maldaru Lake (4,500 m), a pristine alpine lake nestled amidst towering peaks. The lake holds great religious importance for locals, who believe it to be the abode of the goddess. The water of the lake is crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding mountains like a natural mirror. Spend time soaking in the serenity, exploring the lakeside, and listening to the legends associated with the lake.
Camping near Maldaru Lake is an unforgettable experience, as you get to witness sunset over the shimmering waters and later, the star-lit Himalayan sky. This is the highest campsite of the trek, so it is also a good opportunity to acclimatize and rest well for the return journey.
Day 5. Maldaru To Seema Camp
Distance: 12–13 km trek
Time: 6–7 hours
Altitude: Maldaru Lake (4,500 m) → Rashi (3,300 m) → Seema (2,600 m)
Route: Maldaru Lake – Rashi – Forest Descent – Seema Campsite
Wake up early at Maldaru Lake to witness the magical sunrise as the first rays of light reflect on the pristine waters, creating golden and silver hues. After breakfast, you begin your descent from the high-altitude lake towards lower campsites. The initial part of the trek retraces the route back to Rashi meadow, offering one last chance to enjoy the wide Himalayan panoramas of Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Bandarpoonch.
From Rashi, the trail continues downhill through lush alpine meadows, dense forests of oak and pine, and small mountain streams. The long descent can be slightly tough on the knees, but the gradual drop in altitude makes breathing easier and the air warmer. Keep an eye out for Himalayan wildlife—pheasants, langurs, and even occasional foxes are known to inhabit this area.
By late afternoon, you will reach Seema (2,600 m), a scenic campsite nestled beside the Tons River. Surrounded by thick forests and open meadows, Seema is also a popular campsite for trekkers heading towards Har Ki Dun valley. The campsite offers a blend of nature and cultural vibes, as you might meet shepherds and locals along the way.
In the evening, relax with tea and hot snacks, sharing stories of the trek with your fellow trekkers before enjoying a warm dinner. The soothing sound of the river flowing nearby makes for a peaceful night’s rest.
Day 6. Seema Camp To Sankri
Distance: 7 km trek + 20 km drive
Time: 4 hours trek + 1 hour drive
Altitude: Seema (2,600 m) → Dharkot (2,200 m) → Sankri (1,950 m)
Route: Seema – Forest & Meadows – Dharkot – Sankri
On the final trekking day of the Maldaru Lake Trek, you will retrace your steps from Seema to Dharkot. The descent is long but refreshing, as you walk through dense forests of oak, pine, and deodar, with occasional openings that offer views of the valley and snow-capped peaks in the distance. The trail also passes by small streams and lush meadows, giving you one last chance to soak in the beauty of the Govind Pashu Vihar landscape.
After about 5–6 hours of trekking, you will reach Dharkot village, a picturesque hamlet surrounded by apple orchards and traditional wooden houses. From Dharkot, a short drive of about 15 km will bring you back to Sankri (1,950 m), the base camp where your journey had started.
By evening, you will check into a guesthouse or homestay at Sankri. This is a time to relax, freshen up, and celebrate the successful completion of your Maldaru Lake Trek with your trekking team. You can explore the village market, buy some local handicrafts, or simply enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings.

Distance: 190 km
Time: 8–9 hours by road
Altitude: Sankri (1,950 m) → Dehradun (640 m)
