KEDARKANTHA TREK ITINERARY

Day 1. Dehradun To Sankri
  • Distance: 190 km

  • Duration: 7-8 hours by road

  • Altitude: Dehradun (640 m) to Sankri (1,950 m)

Your Kedarkantha Trek journey begins early morning from Dehradun, a well-connected city by rail, road, and air. After assembling with your group, you will start a scenic road trip towards Sankri, the base village of the Kedarkantha Trek.

The drive takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes of Uttarakhand. As you move ahead, the roads wind along the banks of the Tons River and pass through the lush green forests of pine, deodar, and oak. En route, you’ll cross charming towns and villages like Mussoorie, Kempty Falls, Purola, Mori, and Naitwar, offering glimpses of local mountain life and culture.

The last stretch of the drive from Mori to Sankri is especially enchanting, with dense forests and views of snow-clad peaks peeking through the horizon. By evening, you’ll reach Sankri village (1,950 m), a quaint Himalayan settlement and the gateway to several treks in Govind Pashu Vihar National Park.

Upon arrival, check into a guesthouse or homestay. After freshening up, enjoy a hot meal and a brief introduction session with your trek leader about the upcoming adventure. Spend the evening exploring Sankri village, interacting with locals, and soaking in mesmerizing sunset views over the Swargarohini Peaks.

  • Distance: 3 km

  • Duration: 4–5 hours trek

  • Altitude: Sankri (1,950 m) to Juda Ka Talab (2,770 m)

After an early breakfast at Sankri, the trek to Juda Ka Talab begins with a gradual ascent through dense pine and maple forests. The trail is scenic and refreshing, with tall trees, chirping birds, and occasional clearings that offer stunning views of the Swargarohini Peak in the distance.

As you continue, you’ll come across small meadows and seasonal water points where trekkers often take short breaks. The peaceful surroundings make the trek enjoyable, and in winter, you may walk over patches of snow, adding to the adventure.

By afternoon, you’ll reach Juda Ka Talab, a serene high-altitude lake surrounded by pine trees. According to legend, the lake was formed when Lord Shiva let a drop of water fall from his hair (jata), which is why it is called “Juda Ka Talab.” In winter, the lake freezes into a beautiful sheet of ice, while in summer, it reflects the lush greenery around it.

Your campsite will be set up in a clearing near the lake. On arrival, enjoy evening tea and snacks before settling into your tents. Later, soak in the peaceful ambiance, explore the lake surroundings, and witness a magical night sky filled with stars. Overnight stay in alpine tents at Juda Ka Talab.

  • Distance: 3 km

  • Duration: 3–4 hours trek

  • Altitude: Juda Ka Talab (2,770 m) to Kedarkantha Base Camp (3,430 m)

After breakfast, you’ll begin your trek from Juda Ka Talab towards the Kedarkantha Base Camp. The trail gradually ascends and takes you deeper into the forest of pine and oak trees. As you trek higher, the surroundings start opening up, offering breathtaking views of snow-covered mountains and wide clearings amidst the woods.

The trek route is filled with natural beauty – you’ll cross open meadows, tiny streams, and enchanting forest trails. During winter, the path is often carpeted with fresh snow, making it a magical experience. Along the way, you’ll start getting glimpses of the majestic Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and Ranglana ranges.

By afternoon, you’ll reach Kedarkantha Base Camp (3,430 m), a vast open meadow surrounded by towering peaks. From here, you can see Kedarkantha Summit in the distance, a thrilling preview of your next day’s challenge.

On arrival, enjoy a hot meal and settle into your alpine tents. The evening is free to relax, soak in panoramic views, and prepare yourself for the summit climb the following day. At night, the clear skies at base camp offer one of the best stargazing experiences, with the Milky Way often visible. Overnight stay in tents at Kedarkantha Base Camp.

  • Distance: 6 km (3 km ascent + 3 km descent)

  • Duration: 6–7 hours trek

  • Altitude: Base Camp (3,430 m) → Kedarkantha Summit (3,810 m) → Juda Ka Talab (2,700 m)

This is the summit day of the Kedarkantha Trek – the most exciting and rewarding part of the journey. The trek starts in the early hours of the morning (around 3:00–4:00 AM) under a starlit sky, making the climb magical and adventurous.

The trail begins with a steep ascent through snow-laden meadows and ridges. As you climb higher, the landscape opens up, offering wide snowfields and clear views of the surrounding peaks. The final stretch to the Kedarkantha Summit (3,810 m) is steep but immensely satisfying.

From the top, you’ll be rewarded with 360° Himalayan views of the Swargarohini group, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, Gangotri, Yamunotri, and the Dhauladhar range of Himachal Pradesh. At the summit, there is a sacred temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, along with a Trishul, adding a spiritual charm to the adventure. Watching the sunrise from the summit is a surreal moment you will never forget.

After soaking in the views and capturing memories, you’ll descend carefully back to the base camp for breakfast. Post some rest, continue your descent towards Juda Ka Talab (2,700 m), where you will camp for the night.

Juda Ka Talab is a serene lake surrounded by dense pine and oak forests. In winters, it often freezes partially, creating a mesmerizing sight. The campsite here is one of the most beautiful on the trek, offering a perfect setting to end your summit day.

Spend the evening relaxing, sharing stories with your group, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings before retiring for the night in your tents.

  • Distance: 4 km trek + 190 km drive

  • Duration: 2–3 hours trek + 7–8 hours by road

  • Altitude: Juda Ka Talab (2,700 m) → Sankri (1,950 m) → Dehradun (640 m)

Wake up to the crisp mountain air and enjoy your last morning in the Himalayas. After breakfast, begin your descent from Juda Ka Talab to Sankri, a relatively easy trail that takes you through dense pine, oak, and maple forests. The path is mostly downhill and gives you one last chance to soak in the serene beauty of the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park.

By late morning, you’ll reach Sankri village (1,950 m), marking the end of your trekking journey. Take some time to bid farewell to your trek guides, porters, and fellow trekkers.

After lunch at Sankri, you will begin your road journey back to Dehradun. The drive retraces the scenic route along the Tons River, passing through charming mountain villages like Mori, Purola, and Mussoorie.

By evening, you’ll arrive in Dehradun (640 m), where the trip officially concludes. From here, you can catch a train, flight, or bus to your onward destination, carrying unforgettable memories of your Kedarkantha Trek.
