Know Everything About Brahmatal Trek

The Brahmatal Trek is one of the most beautiful winter treks in Uttarakhand, taking trekkers to an altitude of about 12,150 feet in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas. Famous for its snow-covered trails, alpine lakes, and panoramic Himalayan views, this trek is both adventurous and deeply spiritual. According to legend, Lord Brahma meditated at the sacred Brahmatal Lake, which lies frozen during winter and mirrors the surrounding peaks when the skies are clear. The trek begins from Lohajung village, a scenic base camp, and follows trails through dense oak and rhododendron forests, snowy ridgelines, and sprawling alpine meadows.

Along the way, trekkers also pass Bekaltal Lake, another serene high-altitude lake surrounded by forests, before reaching the iconic Brahmatal. The highlight is the Brahmatal Top, offering 360-degree views of Himalayan giants such as Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, Nilkanth, and Hathi Ghoda. Camping beside the frozen lakes and watching sunrise over the snowy ranges makes this trek unforgettable.

The Brahmatal Trek is graded moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. The best time to visit is from December to March, when the region is transformed into a snow wonderland, though April to May and September to November also offer clear skies, colorful rhododendron blooms, and stunning mountain views. With its mix of snow trekking, frozen lakes, panoramic summits, and cultural glimpses of mountain villages, Brahmatal is one of the best treks in Uttarakhand for those seeking both adventure and serenity.

Brahmatal Trek itinerary

Day 1. Rishikesh To Lohajung
  • Distance: ~300 km

  • Time: 9–10 hours by road

  • Altitude: Rishikesh (372 m) → Lohajung (2,300 m)

Your Brahmatal Trek journey begins early in the morning from Rishikesh, a major spiritual and adventure hub of Uttarakhand that is well-connected by road and rail. After assembling with your group, you will set out on a scenic drive towards Lohajung, the base village of the trek.

The long drive takes you through the mesmerizing landscapes of Uttarakhand. The route passes through Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers merge to form the holy Ganga. From here, the road climbs higher, crossing picturesque towns such as Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Tharali, each located along sacred river confluences and surrounded by terraced farmlands. Throughout the journey, you’ll be accompanied by views of pine forests, valley settlements, and the glistening Pindar River.

As you near Dewal, the last significant town before Lohajung, the views become even more enchanting. The final stretch from Dewal to Lohajung is especially captivating, with winding mountain roads cutting through dense oak and deodar forests, while occasional glimpses of the mighty Nanda Ghunti Peak appear on the horizon.

By evening, you will arrive at Lohajung (2,300 m), a peaceful Himalayan village perched on a ridge, famous for its dramatic sunsets and spectacular views of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul peaks. Upon arrival, check into a guesthouse or homestay. After freshening up, enjoy a warm dinner and attend a short introduction session with your trek leader about the trail and upcoming days. You can then explore the village, interact with locals, or simply relax in the serene mountain setting, preparing yourself for the adventure ahead.

  • Distance: ~6 km

  • Time: 4–5 hours trek

  • Altitude: Lohajung (2,300 m) → Bekaltal (3,000 m)

After breakfast at Lohajung, your trekking journey officially begins with a gradual ascent towards Bekaltal, a beautiful high-altitude lake surrounded by dense forests. The trail starts from the village and immediately takes you into enchanting oak, rhododendron, and fir forests, where the cool mountain air and the sound of chirping birds set the mood for the day.

As you climb higher, occasional clearings on the trail open up to reveal glimpses of snow-covered ridges and distant Himalayan peaks. In winter, this section is often blanketed in snow, adding to the magical experience of walking through white forest corridors. Small streams and frozen patches on the trail make the journey even more exciting.

By afternoon, you reach Bekaltal (3,000 m), a serene lake that remains frozen during the peak winter months. Its setting amidst thick oak and rhododendron trees makes it a perfect camping spot. Upon arrival, you will set up your tents near the lake and enjoy a hot meal in the peaceful surroundings. As evening approaches, the temperature drops significantly, giving you a chance to experience the charm of camping in snow.

Bekaltal not only serves as a beautiful camping ground but also plays an important role in acclimatization before you ascend higher in the coming days. After dinner, you can enjoy stargazing in the clear mountain skies before retiring to your tents for the night.

  • Distance: ~7 km

  • Time: 5–6 hours trek

  • Altitude: Bekaltal (3,000 m) → Brahmatal (3,400 m)

After a warm breakfast at Bekaltal, you begin today’s trek with a steady climb through dense oak and rhododendron forests. The trail is serene, with crisp mountain air and the crunch of snow under your feet during winters. As you ascend higher, the forest begins to thin out, and the trail gradually opens up to alpine meadows that offer stunning views of snow-covered ridges.

Midway through the trek, you cross Telandi meadows, which in summer are lush green but in winter transform into a snowfield that looks like a white carpet spread across the mountains. Walking through this stretch is often one of the highlights of the trek. From here, the trail involves a mix of gentle ascents and flat walks until you approach Brahmatal Lake.

By afternoon, you reach Brahmatal (3,400 m), a mystical glacial lake nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. In winter, the lake remains frozen and reflects the surrounding snow peaks, creating a surreal atmosphere. The campsite near Brahmatal is one of the most scenic on the trek, offering panoramic views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti.

After setting up camp, enjoy a hot meal and spend some quiet time soaking in the beauty of the frozen lake and surrounding peaks. The evening sky often bursts into shades of pink and orange, while the night sky here offers spectacular stargazing opportunities. Rest well, as the next day will take you to the Brahmatal Summit, the high point of the trek.

  • Distance: ~7–8 km (round trip)

  • Time: 6–7 hours trek

  • Altitude: Brahmatal (3,400 m) → Brahmatal Top (3,840 m) → return to campsite

Today is the summit day, the most exciting part of the Brahmatal Trek. After an early breakfast, you start your climb towards Brahmatal Top, the highest point of the trek. The trail begins with a gradual ascent through snow-covered alpine meadows and ridgelines, offering wide views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

As you gain altitude, the views start becoming more dramatic. Soon, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of some of the most famous peaks of Uttarakhand—Mt. Trishul (7,120 m) and Mt. Nanda Ghunti (6,309 m) dominate the skyline. On clear days, you can also spot distant peaks like Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, and Hathi-Ghoda Parvat.

The final stretch to the summit involves a steeper climb along a ridge, which feels thrilling and adventurous, especially when the trail is covered in snow. Upon reaching Brahmatal Top (3,840 m), you are greeted with a 360-degree view of the mighty Himalayas, making it a truly unforgettable moment. This is the perfect place to pause, click photographs, and soak in the grandeur of the mountains.

After spending some time at the summit, you begin your descent back to the Brahmatal campsite. The return journey is much easier and faster, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the trail at a relaxed pace. By late afternoon, you’ll reach your tents, where a hot meal awaits. The evening is free for rest, stargazing, or sharing stories with fellow trekkers around the campsite.

  • Distance: ~8–9 km

  • Time: 6–7 hours trek

  • Altitude: Brahmatal (3,400 m) → Lohajung (2,300 m)

After breakfast at the campsite, you begin your return journey from Brahmatal to Lohajung. The trail retraces through the enchanting oak and rhododendron forests, gradually descending from the alpine region into lush greenery. Unlike the ascent, the descent feels easier, giving you more time to soak in the surroundings and take photographs of the mesmerizing Himalayan landscape.

As you make your way down, you’ll pass through stretches of snow (in winter) and beautiful meadows that open up to distant valley views. The route offers a refreshing contrast—starting from the high-altitude snowfields and slowly transitioning into forested trails with streams and chirping birds.

By afternoon, you’ll reach Lohajung (2,300 m), the charming base village where your trek had begun. Upon arrival, check into a guesthouse or homestay, enjoy a warm meal, and relax after the long descent. This is a perfect time to celebrate the successful completion of the Brahmatal Trek with your fellow trekkers.

In the evening, you can explore Lohajung village, interact with the locals, and watch a stunning sunset over the valley one last time before heading back to city life the next day.

  • Distance: ~300 km

  • Time: 9–10 hours by road

  • Altitude: Lohajung (2,300 m) → Rishikesh (372 m)

Your final day begins early in the morning as you bid farewell to Lohajung, the picturesque base village of the Brahmatal Trek. After breakfast, you board the vehicle for a long but scenic drive back to Rishikesh. The return route retraces the winding mountain roads through Dewal, Tharali, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag, with the sacred rivers Pindar, Alaknanda, Bhagirathi, and finally the Ganga accompanying you along the way.

The drive offers ample time to cherish your trekking memories as you pass through terraced fields, mountain villages, and forested valleys. Gradually, the high Himalayan landscapes give way to the bustling foothills, and the spiritual aura of Rishikesh begins to welcome you back.

By late evening, you’ll reach Rishikesh (372 m), marking the end of this incredible Himalayan adventure. From here, you can continue your onward journey by train, bus, or flight, carrying unforgettable memories of the Brahmatal Trek—the frozen lakes, snow-clad peaks, serene meadows, starlit skies, and the unmatched warmth of Himalayan hospitality.
