Know Everything About Phulara Ridge Trek
The Phulara Ridge Trek is one of the most unique and enchanting Himalayan treks in Uttarakhand, offering an experience that very few trails in India can match. Unlike typical treks that end at a summit or pass through deep valleys, Phulara Ridge allows trekkers to walk for an entire day along a high mountain ridge, with mesmerizing views stretching endlessly on both sides. At an altitude of around 12,150 feet, the ridge unfolds panoramic vistas of some of the most celebrated peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas, including the majestic Swargarohini group, the striking Black Peak (Kala Nag), Bandarpoonch, Ranglana, and several other snow-covered summits.
The trail begins from the charming village of Sankri, nestled within the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, a biodiversity hotspot known for its rich alpine forests and wildlife. As you move along the trek, the landscape keeps transforming—starting with thick pine and oak forests, then opening up to lush meadows carpeted with wildflowers, and finally leading to the dramatic ridge walk that defines this trek. Every step offers something new: chirping Himalayan birds, the fragrance of cedar woods, the endless grasslands of Pushtara meadows, and the exhilarating feeling of walking on a ridge with nothing but mountains and valleys surrounding you.
What makes Phulara Ridge truly special is its raw, untouched charm. It remains far less crowded compared to other popular treks like Kedarkantha or Har Ki Dun, even though it shares the same region. This means trekkers can immerse themselves fully in nature, enjoy peaceful campsites under starry skies, and soak in the grandeur of the Himalayas without distractions. The trek covers about 25–30 kilometers over six days, including travel from Dehradun, and is graded as easy to moderate, making it perfect for beginners who wish to take their first Himalayan adventure, as well as seasoned trekkers looking for a unique trail.
Phulara Ridge is best experienced in summer (May to June) and post-monsoon autumn (September to October), when the weather is clear, the meadows are at their best, and the views of snow-covered peaks are simply breathtaking. It is during these seasons that the ridge walk feels magical, with bright skies above, green valleys below, and towering Himalayan peaks right in front of you. For anyone seeking an offbeat trekking destination in Uttarakhand that combines natural beauty, rare ridge-walking adventure, and solitude in the mountains, the Phulara Ridge Trek is an unforgettable journey.
Phulara Ridge Trek itinerary
Day 1. Dehradun To Sankri
Distance: ~200 km
Time: 8–9 hours
Altitude: 2,150 ft (Dehradun) → 6,400 ft (Sankri)
Route: Dehradun → Mussoorie → Kempty Falls → Purola → Mori → Netwar → Sankri
The first day of the Phulara Ridge Trek begins with a scenic drive from Dehradun to Sankri, covering nearly 200 kilometers in about 8 to 9 hours. The journey starts with a gradual climb through the hill station of Mussoorie, followed by a drive past the famous Kempty Falls. As the road winds deeper into the mountains, you pass through charming towns like Purola and Mori, where apple orchards, terraced farms, and traditional Himalayan wooden houses create postcard-perfect views.
From Mori, the turquoise waters of the Tons River run alongside the road, adding beauty to the drive. After crossing Netwar, the gateway to the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, the landscape becomes denser with pine and deodar forests. By evening, you arrive at Sankri, a picturesque mountain village at 6,400 feet that serves as the base camp for treks like Kedarkantha, Har Ki Dun, Bali Pass, and Phulara Ridge.
With its peaceful setting, panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, and cozy homestays, Sankri is the perfect place to relax, acclimatize, and prepare for the adventure that begins the next day.
Day 2. Sankri To Sikolta
Distance: ~5 km
Time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: 6,400 ft (Sankri) → 9,300 ft (Sikolta)
Route: Sankri → Dense forest trails → Sikolta campsite
The second day of the Phulara Ridge Trek marks the beginning of the actual trail as you trek from Sankri to Sikolta. The trail is relatively short, covering around 5 kilometers, but it involves a steady climb that takes 4 to 5 hours. The path begins with a gradual ascent through thick pine, oak, and maple forests, where the air is crisp and filled with the calls of Himalayan birds. As you walk deeper into the forest, occasional clearings open up to reveal distant mountain views and lush valleys.
The trail is serene and less crowded, giving trekkers the feeling of walking through untouched wilderness. The forest is also home to a variety of flora and fauna, and if you’re lucky, you may spot the colorful Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand. The play of sunlight filtering through the tall trees, along with the earthy scent of the woods, makes this section of the trek particularly enchanting.
By afternoon, you reach Sikolta campsite, located at about 9,300 feet. Surrounded by dense forests and open meadows, this campsite offers a peaceful atmosphere to rest and enjoy the beauty of nature. Trekkers set up tents here and spend the evening exploring the nearby forest clearings or simply relaxing under the starry Himalayan sky. The short and manageable distance on this day helps you acclimatize gradually, preparing your body for the higher altitudes ahead.
Day 3. Sikolta To Bhoj Gadi
Distance: ~6 km
Time: 5 hours
Altitude: 9,300 ft (Sikolta) → 10,800 ft (Bhoj Gadi)
Route: Sikolta → Forest clearings → Alpine meadows → Bhoj Gadi campsite
On the third day of the Phulara Ridge Trek, the trail gradually moves out of the thick forests of pine and oak into more open landscapes, giving trekkers their first real taste of the high Himalayas. The distance from Sikolta to Bhoj Gadi is around 6 kilometers, which usually takes about 5 hours to cover at a comfortable pace. The initial section continues through forested trails, but soon the trees begin to thin out and give way to beautiful alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers.
As you ascend higher, the views open up dramatically. This is the day when trekkers catch their first glimpses of the majestic Swargarohini peaks, Black Peak (Kala Nag), and other snow-covered ranges of the Garhwal Himalayas. The air feels cooler and fresher, with wide open skies replacing the dense canopy of the forest. The trail also has occasional boulders and ridges, adding a bit of variety to the terrain.
The day ends at Bhoj Gadi campsite, located at about 10,800 feet. Surrounded by vast meadows and offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, Bhoj Gadi is considered one of the most scenic campsites of the trek. As the sun sets, the snow-capped mountains glow in golden hues, and the night sky lights up with countless stars, making it a magical place to rest after a rewarding day of trekking.
Day 4. Bhoj Gadi To Pushtara Via Phulara Ridge
Distance: ~7–8 km
Time: 6 hours
Altitude: 10,800 ft (Bhoj Gadi) → 12,150 ft (Phulara Ridge) → 9,500 ft (Pushtara)
Route: Bhoj Gadi → Ascent to Phulara Ridge → Long ridge walk → Descent to Pushtara meadows
Day 4 is the most awaited and unforgettable day of the Phulara Ridge Trek, as it offers the rare experience of walking along a high Himalayan ridge with breathtaking 360-degree views. Starting from Bhoj Gadi campsite at 10,800 feet, the trail begins with a steady ascent that gradually takes you above the tree line. After about 2 hours of climbing, you finally reach the top of the Phulara Ridge, standing tall at around 12,150 feet.
The moment you step onto the ridge, the scenery becomes surreal. On one side, you see the snow-capped peaks of Swargarohini, Black Peak (Kala Nag), Bandarpoonch, Ranglana, and many other Himalayan summits stretching endlessly. On the other side, vast valleys and rolling meadows open up, with layers of ridges fading into the horizon. Unlike most treks where the viewpoint is limited to a summit or a single pass, here you walk along the ridge for several kilometers, with uninterrupted panoramas in every direction.
The ridge walk is a thrilling yet peaceful experience. With cool winds brushing past and mountains rising tall on all sides, every step feels like walking on top of the world. The trail is wide enough to walk comfortably but still gives you the exhilarating sensation of being perched high above the valleys. This day is also rich in biodiversity—you may spot the colorful Himalayan Monal or other high-altitude birds soaring gracefully above the meadows.
After spending several hours along the ridge, the trail begins to descend gradually towards the vast Pushtara meadows, one of the most stunning campsites on the trek. Carpeted with soft grass and surrounded by endless views of mountains, Pushtara feels like a dreamlike alpine wonderland. As the sun sets, the sky glows in shades of orange and pink while the meadows turn golden, creating a magical setting to end this extraordinary day. Camping here under a canopy of stars is an experience trekkers cherish for a lifetime.
Day 5. Pushtara To Taluka, Drive To Sankri
Distance: ~6 km trek + 1-hour drive
Time: 4–5 hours trekking + 1 hour drive
Altitude: 9,500 ft (Pushtara) → 6,800 ft (Taluka) → 6,400 ft (Sankri)
Route: Pushtara meadows → Forest trails → Taluka village → Drive to Sankri
After the thrilling ridge walk of the previous day, the fifth day of the Phulara Ridge Trek brings a gradual descent from the high-altitude meadows of Pushtara down to the charming village of Taluka. Covering around 6 kilometers in 4 to 5 hours, the trail moves through a mix of open grasslands, streams, and dense pine and oak forests. The descent is easier compared to the climbs of earlier days, giving trekkers more time to enjoy the changing landscapes.
As you leave the vast alpine meadows behind, the trail re-enters lush forests filled with the sound of flowing streams and chirping birds. This section of the trek feels calm and refreshing, with plenty of shade from towering trees. You may come across local shepherds grazing their flocks, adding to the charm of the Himalayan countryside.
By afternoon, you reach Taluka village at about 6,800 feet, a small but lively settlement with traditional wooden houses. From here, a short jeep drive of about an hour takes you back to Sankri, the base camp where the journey began. Returning to Sankri feels like a warm homecoming, with cozy guesthouses, simple mountain meals, and the satisfaction of having completed one of Uttarakhand’s most unique treks.
This evening in Sankri gives trekkers a chance to celebrate the successful completion of the trek, share stories with fellow travelers, and reflect on the once-in-a-lifetime experience of walking the Phulara Ridge.
Day 6. Sankri To Dehradun
Distance: ~200 km
Time: 8–9 hours
Altitude: 6,400 ft (Sankri) → 2,150 ft (Dehradun)
Route: Sankri → Netwar → Mori → Purola → Kempty Falls → Mussoorie → Dehradun
The last day of the Phulara Ridge Trek begins with an early morning departure from Sankri. The return journey to Dehradun covers about 200 kilometers and takes nearly 8 to 9 hours by road. The drive retraces the same scenic route, passing through Netwar, Mori, and Purola, where you once again see apple orchards, riverside valleys, and charming mountain villages.
The route follows the sparkling Tons River for much of the way, with its turquoise waters glistening in the sunlight. The forested stretches of pine and deodar give way to the bustling town roads as you gradually descend towards the plains. Midway, you pass Kempty Falls near Mussoorie, a popular stop for travelers, before finally reaching Dehradun by evening.
Though the drive marks the end of the trek, it is filled with a sense of accomplishment and nostalgia. The week-long adventure, from walking through forests and meadows to experiencing the breathtaking Phulara Ridge walk, leaves trekkers with memories that last a lifetime. Reaching Dehradun, you officially conclude your journey, carrying with you the magic of the Himalayas and the pride of completing one of Uttarakhand’s most unique treks.
